Fire Department Planning For Operations in the Wildland/Urban Interface

This course is presented only to those departments and their governing bodies who realize that they do, in fact, have a wildland/urban interface problem within their jurisdiction. The program is for orientation, planning, preparation, and training of all personnel. This is a full day course which prepares the fire department for dealing with this situation.

Course Particulars

  • Client may invite management and operations personnel from other jurisdictions
  • Participant handouts will be printed and distributed by client

Course Content

  • Course will not deal with the pre-treatment of structures or the establishment of grounds/structure maintenance 1)
  • Course will not cover any material dealing with the attack of the wildfire. 2) Much of the information and data presented in this course will oriented to the terrain and physical infrastructure of the area of operations as well as the agencies that will be involved in incident operations, both on- and off-site.

There will be material that will be available for reference and planning. Actual incidents and events of the fires in SE Georgia in 2007 will be used to illustrate the importance of the information covered. Applicable NIMS course information will be noted as it applies as well as the new Skills Crosswalk courses.

  5. planning at the fire scene
  6. engine leader knowledge
  7. water
  8. mop-up/patrol - documentation and records

1) such as is set forth in NFPA 1144 (Standard for Reducing Structure Ignition Hazards from Wildfire Fire) and 1141 (Standard for Fire Protection Infrastructure from Land Development in Suburban and Rural Areas). Although the guidelines set forth in these publications can have a positive affect in the protection of those building in the wildland as well as lessening structure damage toward a minimum, those topics deserve total attention as a complete presentation therefore are not made part of this presentation.
2) There are too many courses available to include this in the course.
